Award winning Canadian traditional and digital Folk Art Painter and art photographer/paintographer, Ril Giles was born and raised in Cape Breton. Now residing in Rural eastern Ontario, her paintings and photography reflect the colourful vibrant beauty and laid back life that is rural living.

Though her background is in acrylic on canvas and she still works with paints often-Ril now works digitally creating many of her folk art paintings from her art  photography in a process called Paintography.

A digital paintograph is the taking a photograph and painting over it digitally in Corel Paint to create an original piece of art printed onto canvas or poster framed.

Currently expanding her form-Ril is working more with pencil and inks as the beginning base of her more funky digital portrait series with an ArtBrut/outsider Art feel.

Ril began seriously with art as a young teen under the praise and guidance of her accomplished folk artist aunt, Vinetta Colosimo, who saw her creativity “bursting onto the page” when she drew. At 12 she was given her first brushes, paints, rinse jar and carry case by her aunt and encourage to paint what she saw.

Ril began playing with photography when her husband handed her his Canon Rebel in the winter of 2007 as a way to combat a serious bout of seasonal depression. He dragged her out daily through the winter and taught her how to use the camera. Soon she found herself wanting to get out and enjoy the winter snapping photos of her world around her.

From there Ril switched to digitally painting her photographs when her children were small and there was little time or space for painting with physical paints at home. Wanting to continue with the art style she began with, Ril discovered photoshop, corel paint and lightroom with a tablet and pen-Computer programs that now often replace her paint tubes and brushes.

Ril is an accomplished and recognized artist having appeared in many regional art shows and exhibits since 2010, and resides in Prince Edward County, Ontario– a growing vacation destination being dubbed “the Hampton’s of Canada” and a region well known for it’s award winning wine, food, art and music.

Ril continues to pursue her love of visual art and photography while being active in the art community participating in yearly art shows and sales. She previously sat on the organizing committee for the annual Clic Photo Show as Social Media and Marketing Liaison.

Ril’s art has been described as simplistic beauty and colourful display and celebration of everyday life. Her recent works have been offered to the public through small farm and art markets locally.

Loving bright vibrant colours in her acrylic paintings on reclaimed local barn board, and small canvas- Ril’s art has been most enjoyed and purchased by locals looking to brighten up small spaces in their home and cottages-with one serious collector of her works now up to 5 pieces on private display.

Ril arts and lives in an 180 year old house with her husband and two children, enjoying all that the nature and rural surrounding have to offer in beautiful Prince Edward County.
